Impressive debut winner Unit Five is expected to be on the road to Sydney by the end of the week as connections prepare the colt for a Magic Millions campaign.

The Ciaron Maher-trained two-year-old announced himself with a commanding performance in the Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic (1100m) at Caulfield Heath, immediately placing him on a pathway towards the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 17.

Maher confirmed the plan is to relocate Unit Five to Sydney to help the youngster adjust to racing right-handed ahead of his Queensland assignment.

Rather than backing up in another race, the stable is leaning towards a Sydney trial as the final tune-up.

“He’ll go to Sydney, he’s got to get up there pretty quickly and maybe have a trial,” Maher said.

“You want to get up there, get acclimatised, gallop on the track.

“We train them both ways, but it would be good to get him up there and get used to that.

“He’ll have a few easy days and head to Sydney later in the week.”

Unit Five became Maher’s fourth juvenile winner of the season from just 12 starters, and the trainer believes their current development system is delivering results.

“The system is working, we refined it a little bit last year.,” Maher said.

“Ballarat they’re coming through there, it’s predominantly two-year-olds, and so is Bong Bong.”

Attention will also turn to Boxing Day where Maher is likely to saddle three runners in the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Sandown.

A Little Deep, Extratwo and Nadal are all possible starters.

Nadal resumes after three runs this preparation following surgery to remove bone chips and was last seen finishing sixth in The Meteorite at Cranbourne.

Maher said the run was better than it appeared and that the gelding has continued to progress.

“He’s in good order,” Maher said.

“His figures post-race were good, visually it only looked fair, but he actually went good.

“He probably needs to (lift), but I think he will.”
