Mishani Warrior ended a run of seconds for trainer Les Ross when he landed some big bets in the Garrards Open Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

“At last. I have had more seconds lately than on a clock. I think I have had six seconds from my past 10 starters,” Ross said.

Mishani Warrior, who firmed from $4.60 on Thursday to $2.50 on Saturday, scored by three-quarters of a length from Typhoon Red ($8) with 1-1/4 lengths to Garozzo ($51) in third.

The win reunited the successful partnership of Ross and jockey Brad Stewart who swept all before them last year.

Stewart had been having a “break” from the stable but turned in a fine ride after the horse was slow to go at the start.

Ross said he would consult owner Mick Crooks before planning another start for Mishani Warrior.

“He has been in a few races which were a grade above him. He was back in an ordinary open today and that suited him,” Ross said.

Trainer Gillian Heinrich also ended a run of seconds when Exceedingly ($6.50) got up in the last stride to beat Agitate ($2.50) by a nose in the Ambassador Travel Handicap (1200m).

“I thought we had been beaten again which would have just added to a stack of minor placings this summer. It is certainly good to get one go our way,” Heinrich said.

Meanwhile, popular owner Sam Noutsatos got a boost for his health when Star Sammy ($4.80) won the Australia Wide Directional Handicap (1200m).

Noutsatos, a member of one of Queensland’s biggest seafood franchise families, is recovering from a hernia operation and will have further surgery for a heart condition.

Star Sammy responded to a clever ride from jockey Glen Colless who whipped around the field to lead after Pure Whisper (Anthony Allen) and Terms of Trade (Kirk Matheson) slowed the pace in the middle stages.
