Twilight Elegance targets 2026 Port Adelaide Cup after switch

With Black Type on the line, the Ciaron Maher barn is dispatching Twilight Elegance towards Adelaide.

The mare gets her shot at Listed Port Adelaide Cup (2518m) honours at Morphettville on Saturday, a race that could enhance her Black Type status and future broodmare worth.

Plans had her racing at Flemington last Saturday, but upon examining the forecast showing rain ahead, the decision was made to target Adelaide instead.

The outlook for Saturday in Adelaide calls for 25c and possible 3-10mm rainfall.

Earlier this month, Twilight Elegance won at 2500m on a Soft 5 surface at Pakenham, followed by a fifth-placing to The Western Front in the 2400m race at Caulfield on April 4.

The Western Front captured the event Twilight Elegance pulled out of at Flemington last weekend.

Jack Turnbull from Ciaron Maher Racing, serving as National Assistant Trainer, indicated the Saturday feature suits Twilight Elegance well for pursuing vital Black Type.

“She ran well at Caulfield last start after winning over the trip at Pakenham,” Turnbull said.

“For an opportunity to run in a Listed race and attempt to get some all-important Black Type on her page, it makes sense.

“We know she wants ground and if we do get some rain, then that will only enhance her chances.”

Eleven horses contest the Port Adelaide Cup, with Twilight Elegance allocated barrier seven and Jamie Melham in the saddle.

Sir Kingsford is chasing a repeat victory after his triumph ridden by Teagan Voorham last year.
