The Canonbury Stakes will serve as an important early carnival test for Tulloch Lodge colt Eviction Notice as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing spring debut.
After winning his first official two-year-old trial in impressive fashion, Eviction Notice was well supported in the Breeders’ Plate (1000m) but did too much work early and faded late to finish unplaced.
Trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott elected to give the colt time off following that effort, and Bott has been pleased with how he has returned.
“Physically, he looks fantastic, and I can’t fault him,” Bott said.
“He started a fancied horse in the Breeders’ Plate and things just didn’t go to plan for him, but he seems in good order.”
Eviction Notice will clash again with Breeders’ Plate winner Incognito at Rosehill on Saturday, with the Golden Slipper only two months away.
“There are going to be some quality horses in that race so it will give us a good line on where he’s at,” Bott said.
“He has come back really well. He’s just got to step up and improve on what he did first campaign.”
The stable will also be represented by Miss Chanel in the Widden Stakes (1100m) after her encouraging third behind Outspun on debut at Rosehill.
Bott expects the filly to improve on a firmer track.
“She will improve nicely off the back of that and having had that experience,” he said.
“She will be better on top of the ground too.”
Bott added that runners from the Magic Millions meeting, including Shiki and Lady Moscato, will be saved for later in the carnival, while Plagiarism is being aimed at the Inglis Millennium (1100m).
