In the news:
Appearance has already established bragging rights among Guy Walter’s carnival contenders but the trainer expects Toydini to put his name in lights this campaign.
A first-up win in the Group Two Expressway Stakes broke new ground for Appearance who had not previously won at weight-for-age in open company.
She will be out to make it two in a row at Randwick in Saturday’s Apollo Stakes (1400m), also at Group Two level, with Toydini returning in the Group Three Southern Cross Stakes (1200m).
“I’m pleased with him as I am with all the team,” Walter said.
“He has done well in his trials and I expect him to step up to weight-for-age this autumn.”
Toydini has yet to win a Group One race but Walter believes it is just a matter of time.
“Unfortunately he will clash with Appearance and also Streama at some stage this autumn,” he said.
Although Streama could not emulate her stablemate Appearance with a winning return in Saturday’s Breeders’ Classic, Walter was pleased with the mare’s fifth in the race won by Catkins.
“I don’t think the pace of the race suited her and I’m happy enough with how she went,” he said.
“We might wait a month until the Canterbury Stakes but we will look at what weight she gets in the Liverpool City Cup.”
Among the team Walter is taking to Randwick is Any Day Will Do who ran seventh in the Expressway, beaten just over three lengths.
The race was not one Walter originally factored in for the Goulburn Cup winner but the handicapper forced his hand.
“She went up 13 ratings points for her Goulburn Cup win which I thought was extraordinary,” he said.
“We had to run her out of her grade and she went pretty well and runs in the Triscay along with Gamba.
“There is a another Group Three race at Flemington next month we are looking at for her.”
