When it comes to staying-bred fillies in Australia, few fit the profile better than Rotating Soul.
This promising stayer from the Ken & Kasey Keys stable is by Soul Patch out of Carousel Queen, and in her 10 career starts to date, she’s only once raced at a distance under 1800m.
Rotating Soul is set to line up in the MRC Chairman’s Club Handicap (2400m) this Saturday, looking to grab a metropolitan victory before she officially turns four years old.
Soul Patch, also trained by Ken Keys, ran a strong third in the Victoria Derby, while Carousel Queen is a half-sister to Like A Carousel—another galloper from the Keys stable who notched up a win in the Pakenham Cup (2500m), competed in both the Adelaide Cup and Sydney Cup, and even had success over the jumps.
Trainer Kasey Keys said Rotating Soul has always shaped as a genuine stayer, starting her career in the VRC Oaks Preview (1800m) at Flemington last September.
She was quickly stepped up to 2025m in her second run and tackled 2200m at her third start before heading for a spell.
Back in action from March, Rotating Soul resumed with a fourth-place finish over 1800m at Sandown, gradually stepping up in distance to target the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) in May at Morphettville.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t feature in the finish, struggling to find her rhythm after a slow start.
“She was slowly away and couldn’t get up near the lead, which is her running style,” Keys said.
“She’s a big striding horse and needs all the room she can get.”
After returning from South Australia, the Keys team aimed for a breakthrough maiden win. Rotating Soul ran second at Sale, then again on Pakenham’s synthetic before finally notching her first victory at the same track.
“I think it was well deserved. She had been thereabouts at every start,” Keys said.
“Her work at home had shown that and we had great faith in the family.
“We wanted to try and get a maiden win with her, and those Pakenham races were the best ones we had available and the distance on Saturday is what she’s looking for.
“Hopefully she gets away well and can put herself up there as it’s her last chance to win a Saturday city race as a three-year-old.
“She’s related to Like A Carousel and it took him something like 15 starts to break his maiden, so she’s not doing too badly.”
