Trial action set to heat up as stars set to collide in Winx Stakes 2025

Chris Waller is preparing to unleash four of his key spring contenders at once, with the quartet set to clash first-up before diverging onto separate Group 1 targets.

Delayed due to persistent Sydney rain, the Randwick barrier trials will now take place on Thursday and are expected to showcase a strong collection of talent, including several from Waller’s elite stable.

Despite the rescheduled trials, Waller said it wouldn’t disrupt the lead-ups for Via Sistina, Fangirl, Lady Shenandoah, and Aeliana, all of whom he said were in great shape.

“They have just come up beautifully, touch wood,” Waller said.

All four mares are expected to resume in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on August 23 before being targeted toward different feature races later in the carnival.

“I’m pretty keen to get Via, Fangirl, Aeliana and Lady Shenandoah all to the Winx. I can’t see it being avoided,” Waller said.

“I’ve got a pretty good handle on where they’re at and it’s exciting, but it’s going to be frustrating too that we’ve got to run a few of them together.

“It will only be their first-up run, then there’s King Charles’, Makybe Divas, Turnbulls and Epsoms. They will be goals after that.”

Thursday’s opening 1000m heat on the course proper will feature Via Sistina and Fangirl, alongside Ciaron Maher-trained Group 1 winners Another Wil and Light Infantry Man, as well as high-profile stayer Vauban.

Aeliana and Lady Shenandoah are listed for the second heat of the session, while other Waller runners Autumn Glow and Beiwacht (formerly trained by James Cummings) are set to trial over 850m.

The trials will also feature Everest-bound Jimmysstar and Randwick Guineas hero Linebacker, adding further depth to the day’s 17-race program.
