Trainer Jody Thompson banned over horse welfare issues

A Victorian trainer has been disqualified for three months having been found guilty to charges of providing insufficient nutrition to a horse in her care.

Kilmore trainer Jody Thompson was issued the three month ban by The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Wednesday after they found the 55-year-old trainer guilty of two separate charges.

Thompson was charged with providing insufficient nutrition to a former racehorse and failing to seek veterinary treatment for the horse.

The horse in relation to the charges is former racehorse Skating For Gold who was retired from racing in October 2015.

Skating For Gold was found to be in very poor condition over a one-month period from December 2016 to January 2017. It was also alleged that there were signs that Skating For Gold had been bullied by other horses in the paddock after a number of bite marks were found on the horse.

Thompson was given one week’s grace before the penalty begins, allowing the trainer to run 6-year-old gelding Snake Cavern at Thursday’s Kilmore meeting.
