Cox Plate entrant Trade Storm has boosted his chances of an invitation to Australia with victory in the Woodbine Mile in Toronto.

Moonee Valley Racing Club officials will consider giving the David Simcock-trained horse an automatic berth in the $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25.

The six-year-old, owned by Qatar Racing, also qualified for an all expenses-paid trip to the Breeders’ Cup a week after the Cox Plate when he held off Kaigun and Bobby’s Kitten in the Canadian feature on Sunday (Monday AEST).

The victory capped a perfect day for English trainer Simcock who also won the Grade One Northern Dancer with Sheikhzayedroad.

the much-travelled Trade Storm finished third behind champion Wise Dan in the 2013 Woodbine Mile.

It was the first win for the son of Trade Fair from seven starts this year which include a second in the Group Two Zabeel Mile in Dubai which he won 12 months earlier.

“He settled well off a strong pace,” jockey Jamie Spencer said.

“I felt confidence in the horse that he was always going to pick up. I’ve ridden the horse for the last 18 months.

“Sheikh Fahad picked him out himself when he won in Dubai one night and bought him.

“He is reaping dividends now and he’s won quite a bit of prize money in the last two years.

“Obviously the ground was a little softer than ideal for him but we didn’t have Wise Dan to contend with.

“The trainer, he’s brought two horses here tonight and both of them have won. It’s a happy ending.”
