Toy Show Quality 2014: Clarry Conners rapt with Dear Demi trial

Kerrin McEvoy will ride Caulfield Cup-bound Dear Demi when she makes her return in the Toy Show Quality, her only Sydney appearance this campaign.

Third in the 2013 Caulfield Cup, the John Singleton-owned Dear Demi tuned up for the Toy Show on August 23 with a 1000m barrier trial win at Hawkesbury on Monday, pleasing trainer Clarry Conners with the way she hit the line.

“I’m very, very happy,” Conner said.

“She really extended to the line.

“When she went for a spell, they purposely kept her a bit lighter than most other times and she has a sparring partner now to gallop with which is keeping her fit.

“James McDonald rode her in the trial but has another commitment in the Toy Show so we have booked Kerrin.”

Dear Demi’s track companion is the unraced Singleton-owned colt This Is Australia, also a winner on Monday at the Hawkesbury trials.

“He is a beautiful black horse,” Conners said.

“The plan is to start off in a sprint and work towards the Caulfield Guineas.”

Dear Demi’s spring campaigns have traditionally been her best with her finest moment at Flemington in November 2012 when she won the VRC Oaks.

Last year she just failed to claim another Group One win with minor placings in the Underwood Stakes behind It’s A Dundeel and Atlantic Jewel and the Mackinnon Stakes behind Side Glance in addition to the Caulfield Cup won by Fawkner.

“After the Toy Show she will go to Melbourne for the Let’s Elope, then the Stocks Stakes, the Caulfield Stakes and the Caulfield Cup,” Conners said.

“But there will be no Melbourne Cup.”

Dear Demi attempted the 3200 metres of the Cup last year but finished 19th, 15 lengths from the winner Fiorente.
