Tony Pike doubles 2019 Kingsford Smith Cup chances

A strong barrier trial win from established stakes performer Endless Drama has given New Zealand trainer Tony Pike an even stronger hand than expected in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1200m).

Endless Drama will be chasing his first Group One win after 10 attempts in four countries.

Pike stayed in Brisbane after last week’s Doomben Cup meeting to watch trackwork and the Doomben barrier trials on Tuesday.

It has already been a good winter for Pike who has won three races including the Group One Doomben 10,000 with The Bostonian.

Pike had been tossing up whether to run The Bostonian in the Kingsford Smith or to go straight to the Group One Stradbroke Handicap on June 8.

However after watching The Bostonian work he decided to accept in the Kingsford Smith.

“It was strong work and he thrives in Queensland as he is unbeaten here in four starts,” Pike said.

Endless Drama is a much travelled galloper having been Group One-placed in the United Kingdom.

“He trialled on Tuesday and won nicely. Leith Innes rode him in the trial and will stick with him on Saturday,” Pike said.
