Patrick Moloney gets his chance in a Group One race at Caulfield in his new role as stable rider for the Mike Moroney stable.

Moloney rides Tivaci in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on Saturday, his first Group One mount since linking with Moroney in the past month.

The pair combined to win with Alaskan Rose at Caulfield on Saturday and Moloney said the opportunity to ride for Moroney came from a phone call not long after he finished his apprenticeship.

“I called up a lot of trainers when I came out of my time to ride outside work,” Moloney said.

“At first Mike knocked me back because they had to pay their trackwork riders.

“A month later they said there’s an opportunity and if you come in three times a week you can have the bulk of the spring rides.”

The Moroney arrangement means Moloney cannot ride as much work for his father Gerard and Uncle John.

“I’m still in there when I can,” Moloney said.

“Moloney racing don’t have the numbers. They have nice horses but the Moroneys have four times the number of horses and there’s more chance of finding a good horse.

“I’m learning all the idiosyncrasies of the horses. I’ve done a bit of work with Alaskan Rose and Tivaci and each day you learn a bit more about them.

“And the good thing is I can ride light.

“I can follow a horse like Tivaci who is going to get 52 kilos in the Sir Rupert Clarke and then the stable don’t have to go finding a new rider.”

Tivaci won the C S Hayes Stakes at Flemington during the autumn and the Sunshine Coast Guineas in July before a break.

He resumed with a second to Faatinah in the Bobbie Lewis Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 10.

The Moroney stable has spring aspirations for Alaskan Rose after her return to form.

Moroney says the Matriarch Stakes on the final day of Melbourne Cup week looks a suitable option.
