A return to the track at Ascot this weekend could see First Encounter make a strong impression, with Liam Peters from Peters Investments confident the lightly raced gelding is ready to deliver.
First Encounter hasn’t been seen on race day since February this year when he was unplaced in a competitive race at Caulfield, finishing behind future Group 1 winner Another Wil.
He last raced in Perth back in August 2023, when under the guidance of Adam Durrant he scored three straight victories before heading east.
Now trained by Michael Grantham, First Encounter is set to resume in the Belhus Racing Join A Racing Syndicate Handicap (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday.
Despite a career limited to seven starts at five years of age, Peters said soundness has never been an issue.
“He’s always been a sound horse,” Peters told TABradio.
“It’s just been about giving him the right time to develop.
“His full brother Star Exhibit was similar and it paid dividends — he went on to win two Perth Cups.”
In preparation for his return, First Encounter completed two trials, including a solid showing when less than a length behind Date Withthe Devil over 1000m at Pinjarra. He then had another trial at Lark Hill, finishing behind Azena.
Peters said those runs gave him confidence the gelding was back on track.
“His first trial back was excellent,” he said.
“Being so lightly raced, he’ll have taken a lot from the experience, especially running between horses.
“The 1400m might be a touch short, particularly compared to his stablemate Western Power, but he has won over this trip before, so I’m not too concerned.”
William Pike will take the ride from barrier six in what shapes as a strong return race for the promising stayer.
Meanwhile, Western Power, who narrowly missed victory behind Trio last time out, enters as the $2.60 betting favourite, despite stepping back in trip from 1600m.
Peters doesn’t believe the shorter distance will hinder Western Power’s chances and believes both horses are in good shape for the assignment.
