A late change of plans could still work in Tigroni’s favour as the filly looks to keep her Magic Millions dream alive at Randwick on Saturday.
The youngster was originally set to make her debut in a midweek race last month as part of a build-up towards the Magic Millions 2YO Classic qualifier at Wyong on December 10.
When that intended starting point failed to attract enough runners and was abandoned, Tigroni instead debuted at Rosehill three days later, producing a strong effort to finish second behind Fireball on November 29.
That alteration in schedule ruled her out of Wyong, a race later won in dominant fashion by Paradoxium, who subsequently firmed as favourite for the January feature.
Co-trainer Tom Charlton admitted the initial frustration may ultimately prove beneficial.
“It was a bit frustrating, but you never know, maybe it will end up for the best,” Charlton said.
“It was a good race, that Wyong race, and with the cards we have been dealt, we’re pretty happy with how everything has unfolded.”
Tigroni had to overcome a wide draw on debut and was forced to work early before sticking on gamely, beaten just one length by Fireball, who enjoyed a softer run.
She will again jump from a tricky gate, drawing barrier nine in Saturday’s Spelling at Coolmore Mt White Handicap (1100m) at Randwick, where she needs to boost her prizemoney tally to qualify for the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 17.
“She’s had a week off since that run where she was excellent. Hopefully she can break into the Magic Millions,” Charlton said.
“To our eyes, she looks like she has come on a bit from that experience and she’s in a good headspace so she’s a chance.”
Zac Lloyd retains the ride after partnering the filly on debut.
