Thompson youngster ready to Open account at Randwick races

John Thompson, who has already celebrated a notable two-year-old winner this season with Bel Merci, is eager to unveil another promising youngster as Open Secret debuts at Randwick this Saturday.

The filly is set to make her first race appearance in The Agency Real Estate Handicap (1000m), following an impressive barrier trial earlier this month, where she outperformed her Gimcrack Stakes-winning stablemate.

Jockey Impressed by Open Secret

Zac Lloyd, who piloted Open Secret in her trial and retains the ride for race day, spoke highly of her raw talent but acknowledged she faces a steep learning curve.

“She gave me a lovely feel. She is a nice filly,” Lloyd said.

“Just one trial into a race might be a bit quick for her, but it will be a good learning curve.

“She went past John Thompson’s other good filly in the trial, so she has obviously got ability. It’s just whether she might need to be a bit more seasoned against those types of horses.”

Formidable Opposition

A field of 12 will contest the two-year-old race following one early scratching. Historically, this event has proven to be a springboard for rising stars.

Open Secret’s Background

Open Secret, currently rated an $8.50 chance, is by first-season sire King’s Legacy and was purchased for $150,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

She is one of five juveniles in the field making their debut off just one trial. Among her competition is early race favorite United States, a Coolmore colt and a $1.75 million Magic Millions yearling purchase.

Race Outlook

While Open Secret has shown promise in her trial, stepping up to a competitive race field will be a true test of her readiness and potential. For John Thompson and Zac Lloyd, the debut is as much about experience as it is about results, as they prepare her for what could be an exciting career ahead.
