The feature event for the sprinters at Caulfield Saturday is at Group 3 level. A field of thirteen will face the starter with most of the attention and betting, centred round the return of two smart mares that are both resuming from lengthy spells. Samaready ($3.20) and Jolie Bay ($4.50) return after having 13 and 10 months off respectively.

1. NEESON – D Dunn (1)
After finishing his winter campaign in 2012, the 7yo by Mossman was transferred from Joe Pride to the Hawkes Racing stables who produced him a year later to run second to She’s Clean in the June Stakes at Randwick. Fantastic effort by Trainer and horse last start and he’s been kept fresh since. He’s drawn well in one, especially given that it’s his first look at Caulfield, has been competitive at this level in the past and is not to be taken lightly.

2. THAT’S THE ONE – B Melham (8)
A 5yo by Snippetson who has started favourite at each of his past five runs of which he has won one. He’s last start was in the Listed Regal Roller (1200m) where he looked set to repay faithful punters only to be bloused on the line up by Thy. He’ll be in the thick of it again but just finding it hard to win one at the moment and this is no easier than his recent starts.
3. SAMAREADY – C Newitt (4)
Winner of the Blue Diamond in 2012 who started favourite in that year’s Golden Slipper when running third to Pierro. She only had one start after the Slipper, in August 2012 in the Quezette Stakes and that was the last time we saw the daughter of More Than Ready. She hasn’t been seen at the trials but no doubting Mick Price will have her ready to go and from a good draw, should be afforded a lovely run in the race.
4. UNDENIABLY – M Rodd (9)
A smart sprinter who put together a very good campaign earlier this year that included a fourth in both the G1 Oakleigh Plate (this track/trip) and Newmarket Handicaps and winning the Listed Christmas Stakes. He hasn’t raced since March of this year but his past fresh runs and efforts at this track, would suggest that a big run first up here would not surprise.
5. CHIARAMONTE – V Duric (12)
Well bred son of Redoute’s Choice from Darley who, after claiming the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) in March, making it five wins from ten starts, was spelled. He returned to racing three weeks ago in a RST 90 race at Flemington over 1000m. He led and was only collared on the line, finishing a head second to Pocket Rockets who was very good again last week. Generally likes to race in a forward position so they’ll have to be committed from a wide gate.
6. FUTURE SOLUTION – D Stackhouse (7)
Lightly raced 7yo from Kane Harris stables at Mornington, this son of Belong To Me returns from a twenty-four week spell with one trail under his belt. He was nothing if not consistent last prep winning in Open company at Flemington and Caulfield and placing third in the Listed John Dillon Stakes behind Le Remas over 1400m. He closed well from the tail when first up last prep over this track and trip behind Diplomatic Force when sixth of fourteen but this is no easier.
7. POCKET ROCKETS – C Williams (13)
Had won two in Adelaide, taking his career wins to six, before coming to Flemington and adding to that total by claiming a RST 90 1000m race where he finished hard from the tail of the field to defeat Chiaramonte by a head. He then stepped out last week at Moonee Valley, looking to make four wins on the trot, in the Listed race where he had little luck getting a clear run before hitting the line as well as anything in the race, finishing a touch over a length from winner and in-form mare Broken. He’s in form, from an astute yard, will be steaming home and worth including in multiples at big double figure odds.
8. IT IS WRITTEN – B Prebble (5)
Robbie Griffiths trains this Written Tycoon gelding who hasn’t missed a place in his last six starts, including a third in the Listed Abell Stakes behind Loveyamadly. He resumes here off a sixteen week spell with no trials to his name. He progressed nicely last prep is drawn well from five and at $17.00 is worth close consideration.
9. JOLIE BAY – G Boss (10)
We haven’t seen this mare since she tried valiantly to run down Nechita in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes almost a year ago. Shamexpress ran third. That was another smart performance by the daughter of Fastnet Rock and added to her G2 Roman Consul win where she defeated Your Song in the process, she has a small but quality CV. No trials for her but obviously has the ability. Drawn awkwardly in gate 10 but has opened up at a solid $4.50.
10. YOSEI – M Payne (3)
Resumes from a ten week let up after running seventh in the G1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) in Brisbane. It was the 6yo mare’s twelfth consecutive start at the elite level and she’ll appreciate the slight reprieve in grade here. First up last prep she was an unlucky third behind Platelet in the G1 Robert Sangster (1000m) and from an inside draw, is capable of a similar effort here but she hasn’t won a race since June 2011 – 22 starts ago now.
11. ANISE – S Baster (2)
A Darley 5yo mare who was competitive in some smart races last spring but who has since, only been sparingly raced. She finished second to See the World in the Listed McCarten Stakes and then had her chance to but fell a neck short, when trying to run down Satin Shoes in the Listed Ortensia Stakes during the Scone Carnival. She’ll get her chance from her good draw but she’ll also find this class a touch too rich.
12. HADRONICA – J McDonald (11)
Leon Corstens has been sending this daughter of Charge Forward around in restricted races with only limited success so it’s a surprise to see her entered here and accordingly, she’s a $41.00 chance. Needed to be winning those restricted race and in good style to be considered a legitimate chance here.
13. ANABAA’S LEGACY – (6)
His last win came way back in 2010 in a RST 72 race at Moonee Valley. His shown glimpses of ability in some good races since then but his most recent efforts would indicate that he’ll struggle here.
OVERVIEW
Neeson, Samaready keen to make use of their good draws and with Chiaramonte and Jolie Bay drawn wider out and keen to also take up a forward position, the pace will be relentless here. Samaready may have more luck getting a comfortably position than Jolie Bay and hence she shades her in betting. Both are quality mares and if anywhere near their best, will be in the finish. Looking for one that may be able to take a sit and enjoy the speed, think Pocket Rocket – in good form and unlucky last week and Undeniably – good first up last prep and in G1 company this track/trip, both fit the bill and at good eachway value.
