A midweek raceday gallop at Warwick Farm will determine whether Manawanui makes his latest comeback in the Theo Marks Stakes at Rosehill.

The six-year-old was due to run in a barrier trial on Monday but wet weather forced a postponement until Thursday.

Since the gelding won the Group One Golden Rose three years ago, he has had more than his fair share of problems and trainer Ron Leemon is keeping his fingers crossed for a trouble-free preparation starting with Saturday’s Group Two race.

“I didn’t want to wait and trial him on Thursday so close to the race,” Leemon said.

“As long as the track is a slow six or better on Wednesday he will gallop and I will be guided by Tye Angland whether he is ready to go the races.

“This is the race I want to start him in so hopefully it works out.”

If Angland is happy, he will be the rider in the Theo Marks (1400m).

Manawanui was one of 13 Theo Marks entries taken on Monday with fellow Group One winners Laser Hawk and Kirramosa, who both missed Saturday’s Randwick meeting because of the wet, also in the mix.

Since his stellar spring of 2011 when Manawanui also won the Stan Fox Stakes and the Vase at Moonee Valley, he has had his fair share of problems.

In the autumn of 2012, he lost the Group Two Hobartville Stakes on protest and was fifth as favourite in the Randwick Guineas.

He bled during the first start of his four-year-old season and was given a mandatory break.

He has been raced sparingly since and has not been seen since the Moonga Stakes at Caulfield in October last year.

“He pulled a hamstring in that race so that was another setback,” Leemon said.

“Because he has bled once, it is a case of managing him and not putting him under too much stress.

“So far he has had no problems and has trialled nicely this time in. He came back in 40 kilos overweight and I have got 35 kilos off him so fingers crossed everything goes to plan.

“We will get through his first start and go from there.”
