Dark Son to improve with maturity at the Gold Coast

The forgotten horse of Magic Millions discussions, Dark Son, returns to racing a far more mature horse at the Gold Coast.

Dark Son will be having his first start since October 12 in Saturday’s $125,000 Gold Nugget (1100m).

The gelding, trained by Tony and Maddy Sears in Toowoomba, won Queensland’s first race of the two-year-old season on his home track in September.

Dark Son was then heavily backed in a two-year-old race at at Eagle Farm but was a well beaten fifth behind Strike.

The Sears partnership immediately sent him for a break with the idea to have him back in time for Saturday’s Gold Coast race.

Dark Sun is currently 23rd on the ballot order for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on Saturday week.

A win or second in the Gold Nugget would get him into the Millions field but Tony Sears is not overly concerned either way.

“If he runs in the Millions is all very good but there are a stack of other races for him,” he said.

“But I do know you will see a far more mature horse. He was all over the place with nerves when we took him to Brisbane in October and I reckon that trip will have been a big benefit.

“He has had a couple of jump-outs and gone really well so he is ready for Saturday.”

Sears has Miss Rhapsody making her debut in the $125,000 Gold Pearl (1100m).

The filly is by leading Queensland sire Better Than Ready out of Royal Shiraz, the winner of seven races from 1000 to 1200m..

“Miss Rhapsody has shown a bit of ability and this race should suit her for her first race,” Sears said.
