Punters wasted no time throwing their support behind Terravista’s attempt to win back-to-back G2 The Shorts at Randwick this Saturday, with the Joe Pride runner firmer from $3.50 into $2.70 as soon as markets opened Wednesday afternoon. Pride has a strong hand in the race with Ball Of Muscle also well in contention on the third line of betting at $7.00. Splitting the pair is Shiraz who is aiming for five straight wins and coming off a determined victory in the G3 Concorde Stakes, which historically is a good form reference for this race, there’s not many saying he can’t do it. Returning from spells are That’s A Good Idea ($7.00), Delectation ($13), Rebel Dane ($11) and Hot Snitzel ($9.00)

1. TERRAVISTA – J Bowman (6) 58kgs
Didn’t quite live up to expectations during a short autumn campaign after stamping himself as one of the country’s leading sprinters the spring prior. Has had the benefit of two barrier trials in readiness for his return to racing here, the latest of which he won in good style. Ran third to Brazen Beau and Chautauqua first up in the G1 Newmarket Handicap last time in and with an excellent record here at Randwick, four wins from six starts, should prove very hard to beat.
2. HOT SNITZEL – B Shinn (8) 58kgs
The Gerald Ryan trained galloper was in outstanding form during the Brisbane Winter Carnival earlier this year, winning the BTC Cup and running an excellent fifth in the G1 Stradbroke after setting the pace from a wide gate. He too has looked good in two trials but from barrier eight, will be giving most of his a start turning for home, plus weight, and he faces a challenge to run some smart sprinters down.
3. REBEL DANE – B Avdulla (2)
He hasn’t raced since failing on the soft track in the G1 All Aged Stakes won by Dissident back in April. The 6yo stallion appeared to have his chance first up last prep when sixth (2.9 lengths) to Lucky Hussler in the G1 William Reid Stakes but not entirely sure he was 100% that campaign. Previous fresh run saw him finish second to Lankan Rupee in the G1 T J Smith and on that effort, and his recent trial performance, a forward showing here can be expected.
4. BALL OF MUSCLE – T Clark (3) 57kgs
Returned the 5/4 favourite for the G3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) a fortnight ago and over the rise as he established a break on the rest of the field, punters would’ve been pleased with their charge however, he felt the pinch late and finished third (1.3 lengths) behind Shiraz and stable-mate Craftiness. Fitter and the slight drop in weight combined with the perfect draw, will see him prominent again for a long way.

5. DELECTATION – J McDonald (1) 57kgs
Chris Waller’s gelding rounded out his 3yo season with a very good effort in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap, running ninth and finishing four lengths behind winner Srikandi. He has had two soft trials as he prepared to return from his three month break and whilst he has been competitive in Group races over this distances in the past, he has picked a hot race to contest upon resuming and from the inside gate, may need a bit of luck in running. Will be better for this outing and find a couple too sharp.
6. ROCK STURDY – J Collett (9) 57kgs
Chased home Boban at his most recent start, May’s Doomben 10,000, and the 5yo stallion returns to racing here after finishing last at each of his two trials over the past month. He wasn’t asked to deal a great deal in either so would’ve read too much into them however, from nine, would think his only option is to get back in the run and from there, he’ll need to produce a big finish to run down some smart types.
7. SHIRAZ – K McEvoy (4) 56.5kgs
Really showed what a determined winner he his last start when claiming Ball Of Muscle and Craftiness late to win the G3 Concorde Stakes 1000m, his fourth straight victory from as many starts this campaign. Had plenty to do at the furlong but really dug in late and the son of Zariz keeps finding the line and meeting the challenges trainer Tony McEvoy sets for him. Can’t knock him here either as it looks as though he gets the right run from gate four.
8. THAT’S A GOOD IDEA – G Schofield (7) 55kgs
Won Scone’s Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) first up last prep after two barrier trials and training camp Snowden Racing are going with the same formula for his return to racing in this event. The 6yo gelding won the first and was nosed out by Terravista in the second. He’ll shoot across from the wider draw but may find it hard to get to the fence with Ball Of Muscle likely to keep him one-off. At best when free-wheeling in front but has some well-credentialed sprinters to hold-off late here.

9. ATMOSPHERICAL – T Berry (5) 53kgs
Thought is finishing effort in the G3 Concorde Stakes first up from a spell was ok in finishing fifth (4.5 lengths) to Shiraz. The field was strung out on that occasion with the first three turning for home running the trifecta whilst this 5yo mare had to make ground from well back. Should be able to get closer to the speed here from gate five with the likely leaders drawn inside of her but only meets 1kg better here and has a margin to make up.
RACE OVERVIEW –
Ball Of Muscle and That’s A Good Idea ensure a good speed and if he’s anywhere near his best, which judging by his Barrier Trial efforts he should be, Terravista should be able to finish over the top of here. Bowman will keep him out of trouble and trailing the speed from six before letting him go over the rise. In what shapes up as a very competitive race, wouldn’t be inclined to leave Rebel Dane out of calculations. He should get a nice run from gate two and from wider out, expect Delectation and Hot Snitzel to be the best of the closers.
