The Mittys Vanity 2014 – Tips

Three very promising fillies come together here with each searching for their first victory at Group level. Scratchy Bottom, Sensibility and Solicit all appear to have more than average ability and not surprisingly, they dominate the market here at $3.60, $3.80 and $4.50 respectively. The only other runner given a chance according to the early markets is Girl In Flight for Robbie Griffiths who is $4.60.

1. SOLICIT – D Lane (1)

This Street Cry filly was in sensational form over the spring but unfortunately for connections kept finding one a fraction better than her in the big races. She placed in the Edward Manifold (3rd), Ethereal Stakes (3rd), Wakeful Stakes (2nd) and from front of the field, put up a courageous effort when a neck third to Kirramosa in the VRC Oaks. She’ll again take a forward position from her inside draw which, around the 1400m at Flemington, is an advantage. She comes here without a trial but would not doubt that she’ll be ready to fire first up and always put in 100%.

2. QUAYSIDE – B Avdulla (3)

After finishing close up in each of her previous starts, the David Payne trained filly broke her maiden status at start number six, a BM 64 (1900m) race at Rosehill, by 1 ¾ lengths. She then finished seven in the G1 VRC Oaks and was spelled. She was doing her best work late when resuming over 1400m in a BM 72 at Rosehill a fortnight ago. With that run under her belt and a good draw here, she may be able to settle a little closer to the speed than she did first up but still, would prefer her over a bit more ground.

3. SENSIBILITY – G Boss (8)

She made good ground from well back around the tight Mornington track on debut, scoring a 1 ¼ length maiden win (1227m) back in August. Peter Moody’s then took his Redoute’s Choice filly to Adelaide for the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m). She sat handy to the speed and given that it was only her second start, involved an interstate trip and she was jumping for six furlong to a mile, her effort to finish fourth (1 ¾ length) behind Forever Discreet, wasn’t bad. She was then on the float again, this time for Sydney and the G2 Flight Stakes where she did well to finish second to champion filly Guelph. Had a lot of challengers thrown at her during her first prep and she met all of them. No trials and drawn wide but do not underestimate her ability.

4. SCRATCHY BOTTOM – M Rodd (7)

She grabbed attention on debut not only for her name, but also for her ability when finishing strongly over 1533m in a Moonee Valley Maiden last October. Three weeks after that run, she jumped straight to Group company and contested the G2 Fillies Classic (1600m) again at Moonee Valley, where she got back in a slowly run race and finished fourth (4.9 lengths) behind Gypsy Diamond and Gregers. Only run since then came a fortnight ago at Caulfield in a BM 78 (1400m). Starting the $4.20 favourite, she sat at the tail of the field before saving good ground around the turn and then it was a case of getting clear running. Once the gap opened, she accelerated like a good horse would to win by ¾ of a length on the line from Mambo Lady. Won with plenty up her sleeve last start and looks destined for good things.

5. GIRL IN FLIGHT – R Maloney (4)

Well be out to keep her unbeaten record intact when she resumes here off an eleven week break. The Commands filly has won three from three, all in good style, for her trainer Robbie Griffiths with the most recent run coming in BM 78 (1700m) at Caulfield last November. Under 59.5kgs, she overcame trouble in the run to round her seven rivals up and record a half length win over Collins Street. Has met every challenge thus far with flying colours and looked ready for her return with a smart Cranbourne trial a fortnight ago.

6. CRITICAL ANGEL – C Schofield (2)

Had her chance first up from a spell back in January when, as a 7/4 hope, she finished second to Orvieto in a BM 64 (1200m) at Kyneton. The O’Reilly filly than came to town and contested a BM 78 (1400m) where again she started a well supported 7/2. She settled at the tail of the field and failed to make an impression in the run home, finishing second to last and over five lengths from the winner, Scratchy Bottom. Needs to lift considerably on recent performances to be winning here.

7. SPIRIT OF HEAVEN – V Duric (6)

Half sister to Lights Of Heaven, she won a mid-week Sandown 2yo race (1000m) on debut last June before a brief break and contesting the G3 Quezette Stakes. She didn’t have much luck in the run home so her effort to finish 1 ¾ lengths behind stable-mate Kiss A Rose was a good one. A fortnight later, she then carried 57kgs and was caught from a wide gate when as the $2.50, she ran third (3/4 length) to Marianne in a BM 78 (1400m) at Caulfield. That wrapped up her spring and her return to racing, just over two weeks ago now in a BM 70 (1225m)at Mornington, was welcomed by punters who sent her the $2.50 favourite. However she never raised her supporter’s hopes and finished second to last, over seven lengths from the winner Metaphor. A much improved run wouldn’t surprise but hard to have on the latest effort.

8. MIRALAGO – C Newitt (5)

Returned from a twenty-one week spell for trainer Peter Moody with a third (3 ¼ lengths) to Metaphor in a BM 70 (1225m) at Mornington late last month. Settled in a good in the run from an inside gate but was only able to hold her spot in the run home. By Fastnet Rock out the well performed Star Of Gretchen, who Moody also trained and was G1 placed, she’ll be better again for having had the hit-out and for stepping up to 1400m. Capable of showing good improvement.

9. REZONED – C Williams (9)

The Zabeel filly broke her maiden status in comfortably fashion at start number three back in July of last year in a Bendigo Maiden (1600m) before being spelled. She returned on the 11th January in a RST 78 (1200m) and whilst the trip was always going to be too short for her, she did finish sixteen lengths from the winner. It was no surprise then to see her start at $51 a fortnight ago in a BM 78 (1400m) and although finishing seventh of nine, she was only four lengths off impressive winner Scratchy Bottom. Fitter again but looking for at least a mile.

RACE OVERVIEW

Solicit will lead away and Critical Angel and Miralago handy. Solicit was sensational in each of her starts during the spring and should be suited by the 1400m trip at Flemington. Scratchy Bottom does appear to have a huge amount of potential and after her first up hit-out, which resulted in a pretty soft win in the end, would really expect to see her unwind down the long Flemington straight in good style. Sensibilty was given an unorthodox campaign first up but did well. If she’s not winning here, she will be shortly.
