Smart filly The Last Kiss’ impressive win at Doomben has given Steve O’Dea a chance to fulfil his long-held dream of winning a major race for owner Joe Rapisarda.
The Last Kiss loomed as a major Magic Millions Classic (1200m) player with her win in the AM Giles and Co Handicap(1110m).
A clear-cut favourite, The Last Kiss ($1.95) was slow to start, was buffeted in the straight but proved too strong in the final 200m before beating Our Cinderella ($26) by a neck.
O’Dea said he had a lot of anxious moments during the race but knew the filly would respond.
“She has only had a short jump-out and a long jump-out so there is a lot of improvement in her. But she has a real attitude about her.”
O’Dea and his father have trained a string of top-class horses for North Queensland-based Rapisarda including the dam of The Last Kiss, Kiss Me Katy, stakes winner Bianca Jewel, Ring Me Ruby, A Day To Remember and Notasinglemoment.
“The Last Kiss certainly measures up to them. She is very promising,” O’Dea said.
O’Dea will have a strong hand in the Magic Millions as he also has another Classic hope in promising Candika who won her only start at Doomben last month.
