Tatts Tiara Tips and Field Preview – 2017

The staging of the final Group 1 race of the season, the Tatts Tiara (Race 7) at Doomben, headlines the racing fare on offer for punters this Saturday.

Held under WFA conditions for fillies and mares, the race has some quality names on its recent honour roll and this year’s edition has attracted a good field, with a slight distance drop down to the 1350m.

Favourite In Her Time comes off a gutsy Stradbroke run where she looked all over the winner at the furlong mark only to be gunned down late on by Impending.

As in the Straddie, the draw hasn’t been kind to her and she will likely start from barrier 13 if the current field remains intact.

Trainer Ben Smith, unperturbed by that, suggested that the horse had pulled up extremely well in the interim and espoused confidence that his charge would give a great account of herself once again.

Unable to get down to the 53.5kgs to ride her last time, Josh Parr hops back aboard having been in the saddle for her first run up north, where she finished a creditable 5th in the Doomben 10,000.

We have plenty of respect for what she’s accomplished of late but odds around the 3.40 mark hold limited appeal and we’ll be looking to take her on.

Gai Waterhouse won this race with Cosmic Endeavour as recently as 2014 and with the progressive My True Love languishing as 5th emergency, her representation here is probably left to Prompt Response.

This filly returned to the winner’s circle in the Dane Ripper Stakes after a frustrating run of minor placings at Group 3 level in Sydney.

Tommy Berry did a great job in getting her to relax there, after the horse had developed a penchant for racing keenly and from a favourable draw here she must also rate as one of the main players.

Bjorn Baker’s Bonny O’Reilly also comes out of the Dane Ripper where she showed tremendous resolve to fight out the finish having been forced to race four and five wide early on.

The wide draw arguably cost her the race and a similar scenario may eventuate here with Baker, who also has Egyptian Symbol engaged, left to lament his bad luck after that pair drew 19 and 20 respectively.

Corey Brown has had a stellar time of it since returning from Singapore and will be looking to add to his list of majors on Eckstein.

Kurt Goldman’s filly has had a month between runs after fending off Egyptian Symbol and Sold for Song on ‘Black Saturday’ at Eagle Farm and will be making her first appearance at Doomben.

It’s a little hard to line that form up and we’re interested to see if there’ll be any market support at around the 10.00 mark for her.

Of the others, we’ve seen some early specking for the sole Victorian representative, Miss Gunpowder, who should come on from her win in the Hinkler Quality here a fortnight ago.

Formerly with Phillip Stokes, this mare has clearly adapted to life in the Hayes-Dabernig camp and connections were confident she would run this trip right out.

While Hugh Bowman has been handed a snag in his bid to capture his 14th Group 1 of the season (which would be an Australian record) after French Emotion drew the extreme outside.
