News:

Country trainer Christopher Davis has spent six months on a plan he hopes comes to fruition at Flemington.

Based at Wangaratta, Davis has Just Stellar lining up in the TAB/ATA Trainers Trust Handicap on Saturday.

After her debut last October Davis began planning ahead.

“When she ran third at her first start at Wodonga we put her out for a few months so she would strengthen up,” Davis said.

Just Stellar ran third first-up in a maiden race at Warwick Farm on June 1 before breaking her maiden status at Wodonga 13 days later.

Earlier this month, Davis took her to Sandown where she tuned up for her Flemington assignment with a third place.

“She ran extremely well at Sandown and she looks magnificent,” Davis said.

“She worked lovely this morning and did a few laps of the pool at Wangaratta and she’s all ready for her race at Flemington.”

Success would give Davis his first winner at Flemington after previous placings at the track in an off-and-on career spanning 23 years.

With his team increasing, Davis has taken on-course stables at Wangaratta after previously floating his team from the family’s 300-acre farm at Violet Town to work at Benalla.

It was through fellow Benalla trainer Russell Osborne that Just Stellar found his way into Davis’ care.

“She came to us as a difficult filly to handle,” Davis said.

“She’s got her own personality where she bites and kicks and it’s a two man job saddling her in the morning, but once she’s saddled up and the jockey is on, it’s down to business.”

Davis has fingers crossed Just Stellar, a $7.50 chance to be ridden by Dwayne Dunn, will be on her best behaviour and see out his long term plan.
