Tattersall’s Mile 2013 – Tips

The feature race in Brisbane on Saturday is the Tatt’s Mile. We’ve seen most of these runners during the Winter Carnival and whilst most have performed well and been competitive, none have been able to claim a Black Type win and see this has there last chance this season to do so. Clear early favourite is Lucky Hussler at $1.90 with the only two other runners under double figures being Loaded and Jetset Lad.

Tattersall’s Mile Form Guide

1. FIREBOLT – M Cahill (1)

Winner of this race last year, this rising 8yo had been under the care of Sydney Trainer Chris Waller but will now race in Kelso Woods’ famous colours. He was in very good form last year and this time in hasn’t quite lived up to expectation with his most recent start being a plain effort behind Destiny’s Kiss in an Open Hcp over 2000m four weeks back. Probably better suited to the mile and from three starts this track/trip, has won two and ran second.

Loaded

2. GREEN BIRDIE – P Holmes (9)

Almost a 10yo, this former Hong Kong galloper, whilst running some good races in good company, hasn’t been able to crack it for a win in twelve Australian starts. His most recent effort was a 2 ¾ eleventh behind Tokamak in the Listed Strawberry Road. That was his first look at a mile for some time and, he was only second up from a spell so would think that run would do him good but hard to include him with any confidence.

3. LISTEN SON – R Wiggins (12)

Drew wide at his most recent start, like he has today, but shot across to sit outside the leader and stuck on tenaciously in the Listed Strawberry Road to finish 1.6 lengths fifth, behind winner Tokamak. Will no doubt follow similar tactics here today and need to be able to set his own tempo for over a mile, where he hasn’t won in six attempts, the last furlong will be his biggest challenge.

4. JETSET LAD – (3)

Had a nice run in transit three starts back when fifth (beaten 1 ½ lengths) in the Strawberry Road Stakes before being caught wide and on the pace when fifth in the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich behind Conservatorium. His most recent start however was a very poor effort behind Someday in the Glasshouse Hcp when finishing over a dozen lengths from the winner. Can you forgive him that run? On previous efforts, a good draw and the possibility of a better track, he’d be rated a chance.

5. DOZITMATERANYWAY (13)

Hasn’t made an impression in either run here since coming across from NZ, finishing eleventh in the G2 QTC Cup and weakening from fourth on the turn to run last behind Fire Up Fifi in the Centenary Mile at his most recent outing. Both the above starts were on slow ground so he might appreciate firmer footing but will get no favours today from the wide draw and entitled to be a big price.

6. TOPPING – L Cassidy (11)

6yo trained by Tony Gollan who has ran fourth at his past three starts – the G3 Chairman’s Hcp, a Toowoomba Quality and last start, when sticking on well after settling on the speed, in the Ipswich Cup. Given four weeks off to prepare for the drop back to the mile from last start and is well weighted for mine. Ran second in this race last year and would expect him to be finishing harder than most.

7. MYSTICAL GREY – G Gool (2)

Resumed from a twenty week spell with a fourth in a BM 90 on the Gold Coast and then didn’t appreciate the heavy conditions or wide draw when eighth of fourteen in the Glasshouse Hcp. Will appreciate the ability to settle closer to the speed form his good draw and the drier the track the better but has only won one from ten this trip.

8. PEPPERWOOD – G Colless (8)

Liam Birchley prepares this old campaigner who lines up for start number sixty-seven on Saturday. He’s had four runs back this time in, plenty of time to get some fitness and form but he looks to be struggling to find either judging by his recent efforts where he has ran last, last, last and second to last.

9. LUCKY HUSSLER – B Stewart (4)

He has been a model of consistency this time in and at his last three starts, been placed in the G2 QLD Guineas, Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes and at his most recent start, second to Eximius in the Sunshine Coast Guineas. Unlike the Daybreak Lover and Sunshine Coast Guineas however, he’s draw a reasonable gate today and that may be the only thing needed to see him break through for a much deserved win.

10. LOADED – T Bell (7)

Honest galloper trained by Gosford conditioner, Grant Allard who deserves his shot at this race after winning his latest two outings. He finished well from back in the field to record a nose win over Code Word in a BM 75 at Canterbury before going north and easily accounting for his opposition in a BM 85 race, winning going away by 2 ¾. Get’s his chance to grab some black type here.

11. SPENCHECKA – (14)

Staying who resumed a three weeks back in the Beaudesert Cup and, over the unsuitable journey and under 64kgs, couldn’t have done anymore than he did to run fifth. Drops an amazing 10kgs for Saturday but the mile is still well short of his best and is yet to run a place from five second up runs.

12. SOLEBID – C Munce (6)

After nosing out one of his two competitors to record a win in a BM 85, the All Bar One 4yo headed north to chance his arm in the Rockhampton Cup. Drawing wide, he jumped to the lead and gave them something to catch up the long Rocky straight, doing well to hold on for third, two lengths behind Danagaze. Stepping up again in class.

13. BOOGIE SHOES – J Byrne (5)

An interesting runner, this former European galloper now with Warwick Farm trainer John Sergent who showed some form over the mile back in England. For his Australian debut, he was taken to the Sunshine Coast for a BM 85 and after settling handy to the speed, stuck on to run fifth of nine. That was his first look at a heavy track.

14. TRIPLE OH – (10)

The stable-mate to Loaded but with form nowhere near as good. Closed well from the tail of the field to run fourth (beaten 0.6 lengths) behind Plutorius in a BM 70 at Randwick two starts back before running 3 ½ lengths behind Viking Heart last week in a C6 Plate. Eligible for easier races than this one.

OVERVIEW

Listen Son goes forward and leads with Mystical Grey, Solebid, Jetset Lad all handy and ensuring a genuine tempo. Have to stick with Lucky Hussler here. He’s been superb recently from wide gates and should be afforded a sweet run on Saturday from four. Look for Topping ($13.00) to be finishing hard. He too is in solid form and unlike most here, has a good record over and will no doubt run out, the mile.
