News:

A year after punters sent her out as one of the Tattersall’s Tiara favourites, Peron has emerged as the forgotten horse in Saturday’s Group One race.

As a three-year-old filly Peron took the 2013 Brisbane winter carnival by storm, scoring a succession of wins to earn herself a Tiara start.

It was there that her sequence of victories ended with a midfield finish behind Red Tracer after a slow start.

But the foundations laid last winter, along with two stakes placings in the spring, have given trainer John Thompson the chance to make a more concentrated bid for the title.

Where last year’s Tiara was a throw at the stumps with an in-form horse, this Saturday the race is Peron’s grand final.

“Her last run and this one were her main goals so she’s at her peak, that’s for sure,” Thompson said.

“You’d like to be tipping a horse that has been winning but she’s been running well without luck.”

Peron performed creditably in two Group One weight-for-age runs in Brisbane before dropping back to fillies and mares grade last start in the Dane Ripper Stakes.

She appeared to be cruising behind the leaders on the corner but became bailed up behind them in the home straight, finally getting clear when the race was over to finish fourth.

Michael Cahill reunites with her on Saturday when he rides her in a race for the first time since last winter.

However, he did renew his acquaintance at trackwork this week.

“Michael galloped her on Tuesday and said she’s working like a winner, she’s just got to have a bit of luck,” Thompson said.

Peron is a $21 chance with bookmakers who have Red Tracer at $4.60 to defend her Tiara title.
