With the Queensland Racing Carnival wrapped up for another year, attention now turns to spring features for a number of standout performers who made their mark during the winter months.
Group 1-winning juvenile JJ Atkins Stakes hero Cool Archie will be spelled for the remainder of 2025, leaving the likes of Kelly Schweida’s Sunrays and David Vandyke’s Philia to carry the Queensland banner into the new season.
Sunrays, a promising rising three-year-old filly by William Reid Stakes winner Hellbent, will be aimed at key Sydney races for fillies, including the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes and the Group 1 Flight Stakes.
“She’s had a month off and has come through it really well,” Schweida said.
“She’s shown that she should get a mile and we’ll target those fillies races in Sydney.”
The filly ended her carnival campaign on a high with a win in the Listed Show A Heart (1500m) and currently sits as a $15 chance in early markets for the Flight Stakes. Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes winner Tempted holds favouritism at $4.
Philia, a rising staying prospect, scored in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben before finishing unplaced in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m). Trainer David Vandyke is midway through a planned break and still weighing options for her next campaign, which could include mile Group 1 targets.
Meanwhile, Tony Gollan confirmed that Antino is back in work after his explosive victory in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m). The Cox Plate looms as the key aim for Queensland’s leading stable this spring.
Antino is currently the $6 second pick in Cox Plate betting, with Via Sistina leading the market at $2.30.
