Sydney Cup Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The 2020 Sydney Cup is one of four Group 1 races on The Championships Day 2 and we are set for a true staying test at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

International galloper Young Rascal is currently a dominant favouite in our Sydney Cup betting market and his first-up effort in Australia suggests that he will prove tough to beat.

Will Young Rascal claim a Group 1 win or will there be a Sydney Cup upset? We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 Sydney Cup tips can be found below.

Mustajeer

Mustajeer is the main danger to Young Rascal in the Sydney Cup. He failed to fire in the Melbourne Cup last year, but he started his Autumn campaign with a win in the Parramatta Cup before he finished second in both the Sky High Stakes and the Tancred Stakes. That is the ideal preparation for the Sydney Cup and the step-up in trip will not be a problem. He will be the horse to beat if Young Rascal fails to fire.

Young Rascal

Young Rascal is clearly the horse to beat in the Sydney Cup. He upstaged Mugatoo to win the Manion Cup in his Australian racing debut and he will only improve from that effort. The Intello gelding will stay all day and the give in the Royal Randwick track on Saturday will be perfect for him. Tom Marquand will ride him aggressively to ensure that the Sydney Cup turns into a genuine staying test. He is deserving of his status as a short-price favourite.

Hush Writer

Hush Writer failed to fire in both the Australian Cup and the Mornington Cup. It is impossible to back him in a race of this quality on the back of that effort.

Raheen House

Raheen House stamped himself as a genuine Sydney Cup contender with a fast-finishing victory in the Chairman’s Quality and he is another stayer that should relish the step-up to 3200 metres. The turn-of-foot that he showed at the end of that contest was impressive and he still has the upside to improve on that performance. He is right in the mix.

Gallic Chieftain

Gallic Chieftain made a slow start to his Autumn campaign, but he returned to a semblance of his best form to finish fourth in the Chairman’s Quality. I’m still not sure that he is going well enough to win the Sydney Cup and I am happy to oppose him at $11.

The Chosen One

The Chosen One has been a little bit disappointing during his Autumn campaign. He was never able to get into the contest in the Chairman’s Quality and it is tough to back him in this race off that effort. In saying that, Murray Baker is an excellent Grand Final trainer and Kerrin McEvoy does have a good record in these staying events.

Azuro

Azuro returns to Australia after he finished seventh in the Auckland Cup. The fact that he has already had a race start over 3200 metres this campaign is an advantage, but the Sydney Cup does look beyond him.

Yogi

It has been a while between race wins for Yogi and it has been a long time since he performed at his best. He has won over 3200 metres in the past, but I don’t think that he is going well enough to win the Sydney Cup.

Angel Of Truth

Raheen House went past Angel Of Truth easily in the Chairman’s Quality and that did look like the right race for him. I’ve got my doubts on him running out a strong 3200 metres and I am happy to oppose him in this contest.

Etah James

Etah James finished third in the Avondale Cup and wasn’t disgraced when she finished fourth in the Auckland Cup. She is one of the fittest stayers in this race and she could run better than her current Sydney Cup odds suggest, but I don’t think she is good enough to win a Sydney Cup.

Sweet Thomas

Sweet Thomas has never looked like a winning chance in the Parramatta Cup, Randwick City Stakes or the Manion Cup. He is the extreme outsider in Sydney Cup betting for a reason.

Saunter Boy

Saunter Boy finished fifth in the Neville Sellwood Stakes over 2000 metres and will now step-up to 3200 metres for the Sydney Cup. That is far from the ideal preparation.

Corncrake

Corncrake is a progressive galloper that has recorded two wins on the trot and has far more upside than the rest of this field. In saying that, the Sydney Cup is a big step-up in class and I don’t think that he is up to a race of this quality at this stage of his career.
