Stratum’s sister scores first stakes win

Dystopia, a sister to 2005 Golden Slipper winner Stratum, notched a valuable first stakes win when she held off the late charges of Alberton Park and Ofcourseican to claim the Listed Triscay Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Ridden by Glyn Schofield, Dystopia sat third on the fence in the 1200m fillies and mares event before storming to the front with 300 metres to run.

The five-year-old kicked away for what was looking like a comfortable victory but was forced to fight right to the post as Alberton Park and Ofcourseican launched strong challenges down the outside.

Dystopia ($4) had just a half-head to spare over favourite Alberton Park ($3.90) on the line with Ofcourseican ($6.50) rattling home from the tail of the field to be a head away third.

“She’s taken a bit of time but her form in the past year has been terrific and we just space her runs out a bit,” trainer Chris Waller said of the winner.

“She’s a gun.

“She was chased down by two good mares today so I think the run was good.”

Dystopia was purchased for $800,000 at the 2008 Easter Yearling Sale and Waller said owner Bob Ingham would have been thrilled with the result.

“I had a chat to Mr Ingham yesterday and we were talking about her breeding,” Waller said.

“They’ve got a lot of residual value but still if they do it themselves it makes them very valuable mares so he’ll be sitting at home tickled pink I’m sure.”

Schofield was aware the challengers were closing quickly but said he was always confident Dystopia had the race in her keeping.

“I knew they were coming but she wasn’t stopping so I knew they would have had to pull something out of the bag to catch me,” he said.

Waller nominated the Listed Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) in three weeks as Dystopia’s next target.

Hugh Bowman, who rode Ofcourseican, said the third placegetter did an amazing job to almost reel the winner in.

“Her run was outstanding,” Bowman said.

“I had nothing to take me into the race and she did an amazing job to get so close.”
