Stewards to make Saturday call on Doomben

Racing at Doomben has been given a reprieve with stewards holding off a decision until Saturday on whether the meeting can proceed.

Racing Queensland chief steward Wade Birch inspected the rain-sodden track on Friday afternoon and saw some positive signs the meeting could go ahead provided no more rain falls.

“It’s very heavy at the moment but safe,” Birch said.

“We galloped two horses who were ridden by Chris Munce and Ryan Wiggins and both riders said it was very, very heavy but safe.”

Birch will make a further inspection at 6.30 am (AEST) on Saturday before making a final decision.

However, he said any further significant falls would ensure the meeting, which features the $100,000 Listed Channel Seven Nudgee Handicap (1200m), would be abandoned.

“If we get upwards of 10 millimetres overnight or tomorrow morning then that will be the end of the meeting,” he said.

If the meeting is abandoned, it will be complete a week of grass track washouts in south-east Queensland.

The Australia Day meetings at Doomben and Kilcoy on Thursday were washed out along with Friday’s meetings at Ipswich and Caloundra while Saturday’s Gold Coast program is also a victim of the weather.

The Friday night meeting at Caloundra was to have featured the $100,000 Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) and $150,000 QTIS Caloundra 2YO Plate (1200m).

Only the Toowoomba cushion track on Saturday night and Sunday’s Caloundra meeting on the artificial surface have won over the elements.

Doomben has received around 300 millimetres of rain since Monday which followed 100mm recorded earlier this month.
