Steinem lands important stakes win in Summoned Stakes 2021

Steinem has appreciated a drop in grade to finally breakthrough for her maiden stakes win taking out the Group 3 Summoned Stakes at Caulfield.

The victory on Saturday brought up a race-to-race double for trainers Ciaron Maher and jockey Jye Mcneil, having scored with Enthaar in the Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m).

After being headed by the runner-up in the straight, Steinum, a well-backed $2.60 favourite, rallied under McNeil to score by a short-head from Quantum Mechanic ($7) with Perfect World ($21) a further 1-½ lengths away third.

Steinem showed her class earlier in the year with wins at her first two starts at Pakenham and Sandown before Maher and Eustace pushed her to stakes level.

But in five subsequent runs in ‘black type’ races, Steinem had filled a place only once, finishing second in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) behind Colette last month.

Steinem was coming off a last start ninth in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 31.

Maher said getting ‘black type’ on Steinem’s breeding page made her a valuable mare.

“It’s great for Darren Dance and for a lot of the owners,” Maher said.

“She’s a very valuable filly being by Frankel and out of a good family.

“It was a great ride by Jye. I’ve given him a hard time about this horse. When she’s jumped well, he gets back, but he showed initiative to go forward and put her in the race today.

“Brazen Song was probably going to go forward and take the sit. You don’t want to be too far off especially on a day like this when they’ve got a tailwind down the straight.

“I thought his last ride was pretty spot on and that one was pretty nice as well.”
