A brother to Group One winning sprinter Snitzerland has shown he has inherited the family genes with a barrier trial win at Randwick.

The colt was one of 10 winners at the first official set of trials for the season in Sydney.

Trained by the Hawkes family partnership for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, Sooboog cost $1.5 million as a yearling, a record for his sire Snitzerland.

He stretched out to win his 840m heat by five lengths.

Another of Monday’s impressive winners was Mawahibb, who is also prepared by the Hawkes team for the sheikh.

Mawahibb is a half brother to the Hawkes-trained Mossfun, winner of this year’s Golden Slipper.

Sooboog posted the biggest winning margin, but his time of 49.20s was equalled by Medaglia D’oro colt Vancouver, who won the first trial of the day for trainer Gai Waterhouse.
