Single could be Donaster-bound

A Doncaster Mile tilt for Single is not in the immediate thoughts of trainer Craig Carmody but could become a more realistic option if the gelding continues on his winning ways.

Single is set to make his first appearance for a month in Saturday’s Benchmark 87 over 1800m at Rosehill, having won two of his three starts in good fashion this campaign.

Carmody kept his options open by nominating lightly-raced Single for the time-honoured Doncaster (1600m) to be run in April, but said any autumn targets wouldn’t be considered until at least after seeing how the son of High Chaparral performs again on Saturday.

“I would have to say it (the Doncaster) is a distant thought at the moment but it’s there and they don’t take the next nominations until next month so we’ve got time and we’ll get a better guide after Saturday,” Carmody said.

“Saturday is going to be another good test for him. There are some decent horses in there so it will be interesting.”

An explosive first-up winner over 1500m at the start of December, Single then had four weeks between runs and was beaten into fourth as favourite over the same trip.

The gelding bounced back to winning form with a 1-1/2-length success over 1800m on January 21 and his regular jockey Nathan Berry continues his association on Saturday.

“It was really good to see him win last start,” Carmody said.

“He had a nice run in the race, was well ridden and it panned out well.

“There were a few excuses the start before but it was nice to see him bounce back and show what he can do.”

Single is one of 19 nominations for Saturday’s event and will carry 56kg.
