Australian Criterion is one of 10 horses left in the Juddmonte International at York at the latest declaration stage.
But he will have to overcome formidable opposition with Golden Horn and Gleneagles both still in the mix for Wednesday’s race.
Golden Horn, the odds-on favourite, is the second-highest rated horse in the world behind US triple crown winner American Pharoah while Gleneagles has won both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas this season.
Gleneagles missed Sunday’s Prix Jaques le Marois at Deauville because of wet ground.
The chances of Criterion getting a soft track have diminished with rain easing over the past two days.
British bookmakers rate Criterion a 20-1 chance with Golden Horn at 8-13 ahead of Gleneagles at 7-2.
The Juddmonte was rated the world’s best race in 2014.
