Shinn steers Hadouken to win the Darwin Cup 2025

Blake Shinn made a triumphant appearance at this year’s Darwin Cup meeting, guiding Hadouken to a stirring victory in the $200,000 feature event on Monday.

Teaming up with long-time friend and trainer Peter Robl, Shinn delivered a textbook ride to secure back-to-back wins in the Darwin Cup (2000m) for the son of Real Impact, who triumphed in the race last year under Tyler Schiller.

Originally booked to ride Hadouken in 2024 but unable to make the required weight, Shinn relished the opportunity to make amends this year, calling the victory one of the proudest of his decorated career.

“This race has a special feel — like a Group 1 up here,” Shinn said. “To do it with Pete, someone who means so much to me, is incredible. He’s come so far after what he’s been through, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

Robl, who was forced into early retirement due to a serious neck injury, has quickly made a name for himself as a capable trainer. Shinn praised his friend’s transition from riding to training, noting his growing reputation for delivering well-prepared runners.

Shinn gave Hadouken a perfect trip, positioning him just outside the leader before taking control of the race on the turn. The $3.50 second elect held off the fast-finishing Prince Jofra ($21) by a neck, with Motorace ($3.40) a close third.

“That B Shinn factor was the difference today — what a race, what a ride, what a horse,” Robl said.
