Trainer Paul Shailer is hoping to complete a standout Queensland carnival with victory in the Group 3 Winx Guineas this Saturday at the Sunshine Coast, capping off months of dedication and strategic planning.
Shailer’s stable has enjoyed a fruitful winter, including a million-dollar win with Isti Star in the Magic Millions National Classic (1200m), a placing with Deep Focus in the Rough Habit Plate (2000m), and the emergence of Mister Bianco as a major contender in the Winx Guineas.
“He’s come through the Ipswich win really well,” Shailer said of Mister Bianco, referencing his T L Cooney Stakes (1350m) victory on June 21. “He’s been working strongly and looks ready to peak on the big day.”
Shailer noted that unlocking Mister Bianco’s potential took time. “He’s always had ability, but getting inside his head has been the key. We might’ve pushed him too hard early, but he’s maturing now, and it feels like we’ve timed it perfectly.”
Mister Bianco heads betting markets at $3, with Matthew Smith’s Mille De Lune the next best at $4.50. With part-owner Peter Tighe and others who raced the legendary Winx involved in Mister Bianco’s ownership, there’s added meaning in chasing success in the race named after the champion mare.
Since relocating from Port Macquarie to the Gold Coast 18 months ago, Shailer says the results reflect detailed planning more than any dramatic change in form. “No matter how good a trainer you are, you can’t make slow horses fast,” he said. “We’re lucky to have some genuine quality in the barn and don’t take it for granted.”
Looking ahead, Isti Star is set to return to work after a freshen-up, with two Melbourne targets on the radar: the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on September 13 and the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
Shailer said the filly would then be aimed at the Gold Coast with a view to returning for Magic Millions Day.
