News:

Victorian filly Ungrateful Ellen will get a second chance at an Oaks victory when she heads to Queensland but trainer Robert Smerdon is under no illusions about how tough it will be.

Ungrateful Ellen will contest Saturday’s Group One Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben after finishing fifth in the Group One Australasian Oaks and third in the SA Fillies Classic in Adelaide at her past two starts.

“Ungrateful Ellen has come through Adelaide well, but how do you beat Winx?”, Smerdon said.

“But Ungrateful Ellen runs the trip and if it’s wet it won’t worry her.”

The daughter of Grey Swallow is at $11 with the TAB with Winx the $2.50 favourite ahead of Saturday’s Roses winner Bohemian Lily ($5) and Winx’s Chris Waller-trained stablemate Ballet Suite at $7.

Sebrina, a luckless runner at Randwick on Saturday, is also at $7.

Ungrateful Ellen will be flown to Queensland on Tuesday night with Craig Williams retaining the ride.

Ungrateful Ellen was doing her best work late in the Australasian Oaks when she came from last on the turn while in the Fillies Classic she was posted three-deep throughout the race.

Winx won the Phar Lap Stakes and was second in the Group One Australian Oaks during her Sydney autumn campaign before a breathtaking last-to-first Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) victory last start.

Ballet Suite had a work-out between races at the Gold Coast on Saturday after Waller decided to bypass the Roses at Doomben.

“Brad Pengelly rode her and gave me a good report,” Waller said.

“Winx also galloped at the Gold Coast on Saturday in the morning and she is also fit and well ahead of the Oaks.

“The fact the race is at Doomben and over 2200 metres instead of 2400 is in their favour.”
