Although she presents a spirited character on the training track, Sequinned is travelling well towards her upcoming engagement in the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes on Thursday.
The three-year-old filly, sired by Irish import Pinatubo, achieved a notable 2½-length victory at Caulfield against her peers over 1200 metres with James McDonald in the jockey’s seat.
A repeat performance over the 1100m Flemington straight could be on the cards.
“I think we can (see the same again),” commented Charlie Duckworth, assistant trainer for Chris Waller.
“She had a final gallop on Tuesday morning on the grass at Flemington. She is a bit of a handful as she carries her head in an unusual fashion but tries very, very hard.”
The Waller stable had previously considered a start for the filly in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) last Saturday, facing competition of a much higher grade than she will meet in this event.
“There’s a lot to like and she has galloped up the straight,” Duckworth further remarked.
“Obviously with James on, who’s got very good hands, and he’ll get her to switch off and relax and do those little things right. She has to get the first half right.
“With Chris’ training style, he tries to get them to harness as much energy as they can and then really hit the line.”
“She’s more than capable of winning a race like this and slightly better next preparation.”
A previous triumph in this race was secured by Chris Waller and James McDonald with Amelita in 2024.
