Kayla Nisbet is keen to make an impact in her return to city racing at Sandown after the frustration of back-to-back injuries which kept her on the sidelines for more than three months.
Nisbet broke a bone in her foot in November which sidelined her for a month.
She returned to race riding in early December only to break her wrist in a trackwork fall.
Nisbet made her latest comeback at Bendigo last Thursday and has three rides at Sandown on Wednesday for her boss David Hayes.
“I haven’t had a winner yet but I’ve only been back for three meetings, so hopefully I can get a winner tomorrow,” Nisbet said.
“I’m looking forward to being back in the city.”
Nisbet said she had been building her fitness up and the time out had made her more determined to ride winners.
“It was nice for the first couple of weeks over Christmas and but after that it was really frustrating being out, watching all the apprentices ride winners,” she said.
“It makes you a lot hungrier, that’s for sure.”
Listed winner Honey Steel’s Gold lines up in an 1800-metre event for three-year-olds after a first-up eighth over 1400m at the same track two weeks ago when he was beaten less than three lengths.
“His first-up run was really good so I think second-up over 1800 metres, he’ll run a really nice race,” Nisbet said.
Honey Steel’s Gold is entered for the ATC Australian Derby.
Nisbet’s 3kg claim will come in handy on Honey Steel’s Gold who has 60kg, the same weight as stablemate Auld Burns who Nisbet rides in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1800m).
The apprentice re-unites with Air Diamond in the 1600m event for three-year-old fillies.
Nisbet won on Air Diamond at Kilmore last September and the filly heads into Wednesday after a last-start Yarra Valley win.
“She has drawn a little bit awkwardly (in barrier 11) and it’s not a bad race, but she is going well and keeps improving. I’m hoping she’ll run a good race for me,” Nisbet said.
