News:

Sedanzer has won the Scone Cup for Gai Waterhouse and training partner Adrian Bott, denying Duca Valentinois back-to-back victories.

Waterhouse has won the biggest Cups in Australia but Friday’s success was her first in the Group Three race at the Scone carnival.

Ridden by Tim Clark, Sedanzer ($4.60 fav) raced three-wide on the speed to hold off Duca Valentinois ($9.50) by a long neck with Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Kingsguard ($7) another two lengths third.

Sedanzer was unplaced in the Godolphin Crown (1300m) at the Hawkesbury meeting on April 28 but handled the step up to 1600 metres.

“We thought long and hard after her first-up run but we made the right call electing to come to Scone for the Cup,” Waterhouse said.

“She’s such a good honest, really talented mare.”

Waterhouse said the mare could head to races over the Brisbane winter carnival.

Clark said Sedanzer was on song even before the race.

“She was plain at Hawkesbury and it was hard to come here too confident going off her last run but she was in a different frame of mind today going to the gates,” he said.

“She appreciated the mile.”

Sedanzer completed a treble for Clark on the first day of the two-day meeting with his other winners coming aboard the Tracey Bartley-trained Bare Naked Lady in the 2YO Challenge and the Bjorn Baker-trained Connemara in a Class One race.
