Trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou are keeping a close watch on the weather ahead of Saturday’s Randwick meeting, with a trio of stable runners set to compete, including in-form gelding Grebeni.
Grebeni is being aimed at next month’s Listed Scone Cup, but first he must handle Saturday’s Precise Air Handicap (1500m), assuming conditions don’t deteriorate into the heavy range.
His recent form has been rock solid, including a placing in the Newcastle Stakes (1400m) and a runner-up finish in the Muswellbrook Cup (1500m)—a detour taken when the Doncaster Prelude (1500m) became unsuitable due to wet ground.
Ryan said the gelding’s month-long break between runs has been intentional.
“He likes his runs spaced and he had a big day that day at Muswellbrook,” Ryan said.
“There wasn’t much for him in between. We were going to trial him and then go to Hawkesbury and Scone but we thought he might be better off running in this race at Randwick and then going straight to Scone from here with three weeks between runs. He is going terrific.”
A winter carnival trip to Queensland hasn’t been ruled out for Grebeni, but the stable will see how he performs in his next two starts.
Stablemate Pajanti also resumes at Randwick in the Neville Waters Handicap (1200m), with Ryan hopeful conditions remain in the soft range.
The mare has a strong fresh record with two wins from three first-up runs, and she wasn’t far off the mark when beaten under two lengths in Listed company over summer.
“She was a bit stiff in the (Listed) Mona Lisa Stakes. She missed the kick and got back and she perhaps should have run a place,” Ryan said.
“We will just hang around Saturday grade and if there is a stakes race for the mare it might be something like the Gai Waterhouse Classic later on.”
The stable’s two-year-old Grand Eagle will open the card as their third runner on the Randwick program.
