Press Statement remains the clear-cut Caulfield Guineas favourite but the classy Sydney colt will need to overcome a wide draw if he is to add a second Group One to his resume.

The Chris Waller-trained Press Statement ventured to Caulfield on Tuesday morning for a familiarisation gallop with stablemate Kermadec, the Cox Plate favourite.

In the barrier draw conducted later in the morning, Press Statement came up with 14 in a capacity field of 16 plus one emergency for Saturday’s $1 million feature over 1600m.

Despite the draw, the TAB has Press Statement as the $2.40 favourite ahead of the Mick Price-trained Ready For Victory at $7.50.

Ready For Victory has drawn four and will race in blinkers for the first time while his stablemate Tarzino is on the fourth line of betting at $10.

New Zealand colt Dal Cielo is at $9 after running a bold race in the Prelude when run down late for third.

Press Statement overcame a similar bad gate to win the Group One J J Atkins in June when he jumped from barrier 10 of 12.

“I think the thing with this horse is that he’s very tractable, he can race on the pace, midfield, wherever you want him to be,” Waller said.

“He travels on the bridle and he’s not a horse that gets out of his comfort zone hitting flat spots in his races.”

Press Statement convincingly won the Stan Fox Stakes last start after running in the Golden Rose without luck.

Shooting To Win came through the same two races last year before winning the Guineas.

Mick Price considers Ready For Victory and Tarzino as his best chances yet to win a Caulfield Guineas.

While he is happy with Ready For Victory’s draw and says he has the better turn of foot of the two, he believes barrier three is not as good as it seems for Tarzino.

“Tarzino is a big, long-striding horse and I would’ve preferred him to draw midfield or a little wider,” Price said.

“He’s going to have a very good finish on him but he doesn’t want to be getting held up while those around him are going around the outside.”
