Satono Glow continued her impressive run, securing her third consecutive feature race victory for three-year-old fillies against colts by powerfully winning the Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton trained filly overcame a significant deficit, conceding hot favourite Paradoxium at least five lengths at the top of the straight, but unleashed a devastating burst of closing speed to achieve an exciting victory.
This win represented the third leg of a clean sweep by fillies in successive feature races at Rosehill, following Proxima Dea’s triumph in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes and Chuchichschtli’s performance in the Listed Tapp-Craig.
“She’s a very, very good filly,” O’Shea remarked.
“He’s a good colt (Paradoxium) so for her to run him down, it was a big effort.”
Satono Glow ($2.60) powered home under Zac Lloyd, drawing clear to post a widening one-and-a-quarter lengths winning margin from Steel Will ($12), with Why So Hard ($21) a further neck behind in third.
Paradoxium, which had been heavily backed into $2 favouritism, appeared to be travelling well around the turn and into the straight, but faltered in the final 100 metres, fading to fourth.
Lloyd, who also rode Proxima Dea to victory, expressed his confidence in Satono Glow’s ability to catch Paradoxium, even when the filly was giving the leader a substantial start at the 400m mark.
“At the pace they went, I was able to get into a spot, and I thought if I could get her balanced up and give her the chance to show her acceleration, I could win,” Lloyd stated.
“Obviously it is hard coming the widest around Rosehill and picking up pretty good horses like Paradoxium but once I bought her out, picked her up, she was coming pretty quick.
“She is very smart, and as you saw in the mounting yard and again after the race, she is so professional and knows her job.
“It is half the battle. The other half is ability, and she has a lot of it.”
O’Shea holds a very high opinion of Satono Glow and indicated the filly would be targeted at the Group 1 $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 31.
Satono Glow had made a brilliant return in the Cap d’Antibes Stakes at Flemington, but O’Shea brought her back to Sydney for the Roman Consul Stakes.
“We wanted to see where we fit in, she’s ticked every box so far, and this race traditionally has always provided good form for the Coolmore,” O’Shea explained.
“We wanted to bring her home, keep her under our eye, and that was the rationale behind that.
“I thought she did a good job first-up and then she has had a little tick-over trial.
“It has all worked nicely so far so hopefully we can have a good next three weeks and turn up in Melbourne to give a good account of herself.”
The Roman Consul Stakes has historically served as a strong indicator for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, with notable winners like Zoustar (2012), Brazen Beau (2013) and Switzerland (2025) completing the double.
In the updated betting for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, TAB Fixed Odds have tightened Satono Glow into $6 equal third favouritism with St Gotthard, with The Next Episode the $3 favourite and Natural Fling at $5.
Satono Glow has now won four of her five starts – a record O’Shea believes should be unbeaten – and her career earnings have reached $485,200.
She has proven to be a shrewd acquisition, having been purchased by O’Shea for $260,000 at the 2025 NZ Karaka Yearling Sale.
“We put together a syndicate of people to buy five fillies (each season) under the guidance of James Bester,” O’Shea stated.
“No one knows more about fillies than James. He has bought Hips Don’t Lie among some other great fillies.
“He has helped us select this filly and a couple of others. They have done really well over the last couple of years and now they have got a real good one.”
With the Coolmore Stud Stakes on the horizon, exploring Australian betting sites for the latest racing odds is a smart move.
