Michael Freedman continues to build depth in his two-year-old ranks after Satin Summer made an impressive debut victory at Randwick, earning herself a shot at stakes company.
By Written Tycoon, the filly is out of 2011 Silver Slipper winner Satin Shoes and is a homebred for Belinda Bateman.
She provided Freedman with his second Sydney juvenile winner in as many weeks following Outspan’s success at Rosehill, with the trainer keen to see her progress toward black-type company.
“I think she is a filly going places,” Freedman said.
“Obviously, we’d be keen to try to get some black type somewhere.
“As long as she pulls up alright we’ll have a think about it, but one of those fillies races (in Sydney) might be a nice option or going to Melbourne for one of the fillies’ Blue Diamond Preludes in two weeks’ time.”
Ridden by Tommy Berry, Satin Summer ($6) showed early speed to cross and lead before kicking strongly in the straight to defeat Zambales ($3.60 fav) by 1½ lengths, with Ciaron’s Star ($7.50) finishing third.
Freedman believes the filly has even more to offer once she learns to settle behind runners.
“It wasn’t the plan to lead on her today. I’ve always felt she was a filly that would enjoy having something to follow but the way things panned out, Tommy took the initiative, and she skipped away,” he said.
“To be fair, Matt Vella had her in pre-training and said she was a sharp filly. She’s done nothing but please us since she arrived.”
Freedman also has Breeders’ Plate winner and early Golden Slipper favourite Incognito set to resume in next weekend’s Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.
Those following the juvenile form can assess the latest betting markets for the race as the autumn features approach.
