Casual Connection could target the Brisbane Cup 2025

It was a case of history repeating for John Sargent as Casual Connection returned to claim the PF Civil Handicap (2400m) at Randwick for the second consecutive year, staking his claims for another tilt at the Brisbane Cup (3200m).

The now six-year-old stayer powered through the heavy going to record his eighth career win, surging clear under apprentice Molly Bourke to score by three lengths. Favourite Wuddzz ($4.80) chased hard for second, while Asgoodassobergets ($6.50) filled third.

Sargent said the conditions suited the gelding perfectly and hinted at a Brisbane return – with one key caveat.

“I wouldn’t take him again unless it was wet,” Sargent said. “He went last year and it was rock-hard, and he didn’t like it. He’s getting older now, so we’ll just tick over and see how the weather turns out.”

Rider Molly Bourke executed the perfect front-running ride, getting the gelding into a rhythm early and keeping the momentum flowing.

“He’s a real momentum horse,” Bourke said. “You can’t stop and go with him — once he winds up, he just keeps going.”

Meanwhile, young rider William Stanley notched his first Saturday city win with Flying Embers ($3.40 fav) in the Midway Handicap (1400m). Trained by John Thompson, the promising filly toughed it out under a strong ride.

“Kris Lees gave him a big rap and said he’s a good kid,” Thompson said. “He’s strong, listens, and is determined to improve — I like that in a jockey.”

Flying Embers looks capable of rising through the grades, with Thompson full of praise for her tenacity.
