Sargent fillies out to underline Australian Oaks 2025 claims

Stablemates Powers Of Opal and Inevitable Truth are both on the path to the ATC Australian Oaks, but their roads to the Group 1 feature will differ.

Powers Of Opal is set to contest Saturday’s Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill before stepping up in distance for the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) as a lead-up to the Oaks.

Meanwhile, Inevitable Truth will line up in Friday’s Kembla Grange Classic (1600m), aiming to follow in the footsteps of her trainer John Sargent’s former star mare Luvaluva, who claimed victory in the race in 2018.

“I think she will be very competitive on Friday because she’s a lot stronger than she was in the spring,” Sargent said.

“The plan is to go from there to the Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) and then onto the Oaks.”

Inevitable Truth showed promise in the spring, finishing fourth in two middle-distance fillies’ features in Melbourne. She resumed with a narrow defeat over 1300m, a distance shorter than ideal.

In preparation for her next run, Sargent has made a slight gear adjustment, switching from blinkers to visors, hoping to sharpen her focus.

“She just got run down first-up at Kembla. She didn’t see the other horse coming, so I’ve made the change,” Sargent explained.

“She’s drawn barrier nine, but that’s not a bad spot. Tyler (Schiller) should be able to give her a nice, economical run.”

Powers Of Opal, who finished runner-up in the VRC Oaks, had a luckless return when unplaced behind Lady Shenandoah in the Surround Stakes (1400m), having found herself on the inferior part of the track.

Despite that result, Sargent expects a sharper performance in her second-up run on Saturday.

“She has definitely gone to another level in the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“If she runs well in the Phar Lap Stakes, she’ll be right in the mix for the Vinery and the Oaks.”
