Santa Ana Lane to return in G2 The Shorts Field

The Everest favourite Santa Ana Lane has continued his build-up towards a spring return, cruising to a third placing in a Cranbourne barrier trial.

The Anthony Freedman-trained sprinter was having his second barrier trial of his spring preparation in an 800m-heat on Monday on rain-affected ground and was held together by his rider as he worked home under his own steam.

The trial was won by Evil Cry by a long neck over Island Daze with Santa Ana Lane another 3-1/4-lengths away in the field of seven.

Santa Ana Lane is scheduled to have his lead-up to the $14 millon Everest in the Group Two Shorts at Randwick on September 21.

Also at Cranbourne, multiple Group One winner Gailo Chop was given a solid hit-out, winning a 1550m-heat by 12 lengths over maiden galloper Display Case.

Gailo Chop was having the third trial in his comeback from injury having not raced since finishing second to Winx in the 2018 Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.
