Trainer Bjorn Baker is putting a line through Stefi Magnetica’s first-up performance and is optimistic that a better barrier draw will lead to a stronger showing in the upcoming George Ryder Stakes.
The mare had little luck in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m), where she was caught wide from a tricky gate. Forced to press forward before the bend, she faded late to finish nearly five lengths behind winner Royal Patronage.
While the result wasn’t ideal, Baker believes she showed resilience under the circumstances.
“It was a tough watch, but she didn’t finish miles behind them,” Baker said.
“She galloped well on Tuesday morning, and based on that work, we definitely head in with confidence.”
Although Stefi Magnetica has yet to win beyond 1400m, she proved her versatility when finishing a close fifth in the Golden Eagle (1500m) and running fourth behind weight-for-age star Mr Brightside in the Champions Mile (1600m) last spring.
The mare holds nominations for both the Doncaster Mile and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Randwick, with her run on Saturday set to determine her next target.
Meanwhile, trainer James Cummings has confirmed that Tom Kitten has returned to Sydney for the George Ryder Stakes after a sensational victory over Mr Brightside in the All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington.
As a backmarker, Tom Kitten will likely have to chase from off the pace, especially after drawing a wide gate. Cummings acknowledges this challenge but is confident in his runner’s condition.
“He brings the form of a brilliant All-Star Mile win to Sydney, and the competition he faced down there was as strong as anything he will see here,” Cummings said.
“I like that he’s coming into this race third-up. The draw isn’t ideal, and he’ll have work to do, but he’s in great shape and ready to run well.”
