Ruby Walsh in drama-packed victory

Ruby Walsh has made an amazing recovery on Killultagh Vic to claim a dramatic victory in a Novice Chase at Leopardstown.

The 2-7 favourite was in front heading to the last fence which he appeared to jump well, but he pitched on landing which allowed two other horses to go past him.

Walsh lost an iron in the incident but that did not stop the ace horseman from gathering up the Willie Mullins-trained seven-year-old, who rallied in gallant fashion.

He was back in front less than 100 yards from the finish and won by three-quarters of a length from Blair Perrone.

“That was extraordinary from both horse and rider,” Mullins said.

“I thought he was gone and a lot of lads would have pulled him up.

“It was an extraordinary piece of riding and an extraordinary feat by the horse.

“Ruby said when he gave him a squeeze he took off and was going to the fence too fast.

“I thought Ruby was going to go out the side-door and it’s harder to ride with one iron than without the both – certainly Ruby’s experience paid off.”

Mullins said the performance proved Killultagh Vic’s ability and he would be entered for several of the big races coming up including the Arkle.
