Sydney sprinter Redzel has defied his rivals for an all-the-way win in the Doomben 10,000, the first Group One race of the Queensland winter carnival.

Ridden by leading Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden, Redzel held off the fast-finishing Counterattack with Derryn taking third.

“I knew coming to the turn passing the 400 (metres) if he could hold it together a little bit longer he was going to make it a little bit difficult (for the chasers),” Byrne said.
