Repossession too good in the Beaufine Stakes 2025

Repossession underlined his rising talent on Saturday, bouncing back from a disrupted lead-up to claim the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Pinjarra in impressive fashion.

The gelding, trained by Chris and Michael Gangemi, showed his affinity for the Pinjarra straight again, notching his third consecutive win and delivering Chris Gangemi his third Beaufine success after past victories with Durendal (2018) and Rock Magic (2015).

Repossession had been a late scratching from a 1200m event at Pinjarra just a week earlier due to a foot abscess, casting doubt over whether he’d be fit to run this time around.

“He’s a good horse,” Chris Gangemi said.

“I haven’t had one this good for a long time.

“He’s dealt with some crap in the last week.

“Even once the abscess blew out, he was still pretty sore on his heel.

“For him to deal with that, miss some work, his heel a bit tender, and still win, he’s a really exciting horse.

“I was sort of 50-50 whether to start him or not, and even to gallop him on the Tuesday, but I’m glad we did now.

“He’ll go to the paddock now.”

Purchased for just $62,500, Repossession has now earned nearly half a million dollars with five wins from seven starts, the Beaufine Stakes marking his first black-type success.

He’s already being touted as the stable’s most promising horse since Rock Magic, the former sprint star and fan favourite who elevated the Gangemi team to elite level.

“You should never compare him to Rock Magic,” Gangemi said.

“He has a long, long, long way to go to be half as good as him.

“But he’s definitely the smartest young horse we’ve probably ever had.

“I think that’s just the start of a very good career hopefully.”

Repossession wasn’t the only bright spot for the team, with jockey Brad Parnham guiding him to victory at just 54kg after wasting hard, then following up immediately with a win aboard Timeless Gem.

Timeless Gem is trained by Stephen Miller, who also prepared Beaufine runner-up Toropa. Meanwhile, Gangemi’s other runner, Phanta, finished seventh in the feature sprint.
